buses and the capital

April 27th, 2004

The BBC claims buses are back in favour, which I don’t quite agree with. They do mention in passing that the increase in bus patronage probably had something to do with the incredible investment in London buses (as a consequence of congestion charging), and hence the recent ‘London bus love’ trend (I made up the name, the trend exists though!).

I don’t think this is reflected across the UK in general though. Certainly not in Bristol, where bus fares have increased ridiculously, as much as 40% in some cases, at just 1 fare-change interval.

Buses outside London are basically unregulated and until the day this changes, no significant changes are likely to come about where bus operators abuse their monopolistic or dominant market positions.

i think even bus patronage in brighton has decreased in the last couple of years, brighton & hove bus company seem to have withheld the figures which to me indicates a fall!
