does thetrainline suck?
July 26th, 2004
YES
Extract from thetrainline FAQ:
Question: Why can’t I book bikes on-line now?
Answer: thetrainline undertakes regular reviews of website performance and ease of use to ensure that it offers the best possible service to all customers. Following a website review of the functionality that was used on the site in July 2003 and considering customer feedback, we identified the need to streamline the train ticket booking and purchasing process.
In order to speed up this process for all customers we removed some of the filter options, for example search by ticket type, and the bicycle booking facility.
Basically, what they are saying is they redesigned their web site, forgot to include the functionality to book bikes, or else the designers determined it would be too expensive using their new design, and so they left it out.
To suggest that customers had requested the removal of the ability to book bikes is just ridiculous.

Amazing.
I just found Question 475:
Why are some Apex fares listed as £999, is it a mistake?
I’ll leave you to find the answer. I am shocked.

thetrainline probably did ask people questions like ‘do you want the online booking process to be speeded up’, etc, then translated that to mean whatever they wanted to. reminds me of when you read a notice that starts with the phrase ‘for your convenience…’ and whatever they go on to say is not at all convenient for anyone but the company. i saw one in a hotel that said ‘for your convenience, we have remove all the ice machines except those on the ground floor’.
