things you hear on the bus

July 30th, 2004

On the last 362 to Clevedon last night, I overheard an extensive conversation by some kids about Ashton Court Festival.

I heard how one of them volunteered at the festival but didn’t show up for work, they knew about the financial problems the festival was having, and said ‘they would pay if they had to’ - but none of them had actually paid to get in on either days, they just ‘happened’ to find their way in for free.

They also made some comments about bands, indicating ‘The Stranglers were rubbish, I didn’t know any of their songs, the only good one was the one I knew’, ‘apparently the best thing all weekend was this guy with loads of mini guitars and funny sound effects’ (that’ll be Kid Carpet then. And it went on.

There was a certain sense of irony listening to the kids go on about a festival which obviously means a lot to them, that they couldn’t be bothered to pay for, having just returned from the annual informal debrief from the festival to find out it’s financial problems remain.
