this weekend I discovered (with Sarah) that Athens is a fantastic place.
highlights of this wonderful place:
- food.
- the acropolis, especially the parthanon, and visiting for free on sundays (saving €12)
- the market stalls
- bios. despite a slightly overpriced beer.
lowlights:
- the traffic. there are so many cars and motorbikes, and very few pedestrians. the city centre seems to have been made for motor vehicles.
- the traffic. drivers are mad in athens, motorcyclists do not wear helmets and drive at high speed. a motorbike crashed horrifically, a short distance from where we were standing – the helmetless driver, thrown 6 feet in the air and sideways, came to rest after being wrapped around a street light, his bike in the middle of the road.
- the smoke. everybody smokes, and you actually cannot escape cigarette smoke. it is said that the smog from cars has caused significant damage to the acropolis, however we decided it was the cigarette smoke.
- the meatmarket stalls. i can’t imagine the smell in summer.
we were even joined by stelios on our return journey. he even paid for his drinks, strictly no blags.

[...] ;t cycle it is far too dangerous. There is also no cycle parking, only motorbike parking. Tom described the horrible crash we saw. with cigarettes I was impressed in a perverse way [...]
