disappointed but slightly excited

February 27th, 2005

As anybody who has spoken to me in the last couple of days will know, having been cooped up indoors working, I was very excited about the bike ride I had planned for this morning.

I bought some supplies (nuts, dried fruit, dundee cake, water bottles, chocolate and bananas), and the weather looked good. Or it did until 6 this morning when I got up for breakfast. First things first, the ForecastFox Firefox extension told me that it was 0 degrees C with possible snow. Pah.

So I got up, ate, and prepared. There were a few flakes which had settled, but nothing more. This concerned me slightly, because settled flakes meant sub-zero ground temperature, which means ice. But nonetheless, I continued.

I packed my panniers and was all set to go, arriving at the front door, bike in hand, just before sunrise at 6.45. I opened the door to a virtual blizzard. The snow had started, really quite hard, and was settling. 1 step outside and I nearly slipped over.

So I decided it would be crazy to go out on my bike, and begrudgingly carried it back upstairs. I did however take a walk down to the seafront in the snow.

Amazing. I’ve never seen snow actually settle like this so near to the sea, often the snow settles nearby, but not by the sea. The sea was totally flat, there was a slight mist and I discovered that pebbles look great in the snow.

There is something really quite bizarre about snow falling into the sea which I can’t quite put my finger on.

I don’t think I can imagine the waves breaking on the snow. That’s the bit that confuses me. Well actually I can, my imagination isn’t that rubbish, but I would like to see it because I don’t think it’s something you would see very often. Did you see it this morning?

No, because the sea was so calm, the waves almost didn’t exist.

What a brilliant photo. I have been very disappointed in the snow department. We were promised 2-5 cm but had hardly any. We did have those little polystyrene balls once. I hope you had your picnic at home.
