cool not so cool

September 7th, 2005

GNER have announced that cyclists are now able to make reservations for their bicycles using their web site. The trainline removed this functionality some years ago, and so cycle reservations can only be made in person or by phone.

Excellent move by GNER, except for the implementation detail. A cyclist fills in an online form, only to then be called back within 24 hours by a customer service rep to actually process the ticket sale on the phone. So really, it’s like phoning National Rail, but in reverse.

Cool, but not so cool. Why not an automated service? A web service?
