the east cursed main line

January 19th, 2006

Yesterday I travelled to London for the day, using GNER down the east coast. I think I’m cursed on this line, as the last time I tried to do such a long return journey in one day, I got severely held up (because a Virgin train in front of mine caught fire, causing us to wait [the electricity on the line was turned off, so we couldn't move for hours] and then we had to get a bus from Dunbar to Edinburgh).. and yesterday, the train broke down outside Newcastle, causing another big delay.

Oh well. Maybe the East Coast Main Line isn’t as exciting as I’d hoped.

    Count yourself lucky.

Any journey in the West Country I’ve ever taken has always seemded to include a tour around the periphery of Wales [nice if you've got the time and I'm a big fan of "Coast"] and several bus journeys between stations thrown in for good measure. Usually about 5 hours for somewhere an hour up the road by car. Doesn’t really help you make the right environmental choices does it?
