The cost of… what?
August 5th, 2007
During a trip to Brixton today, I couldn’t help compare the price of the items I was purchasing.
Purchase 1: a sealed bag of spring onions, cleaned and prepared for use (courtesy of M&S) – price? £0.99*
Purchase 2: a 4-way power extension lead (courtesy of Woolworths) – price? £2.00
I spent more of the day pondering prices after reading an article in The Guardian about supermarkets selling £2 chickens.
Is it me, or does it seem a bit odd that I can buy a substantial piece of home electrical equipment, which I expect to last a number of years, for twice the cost of a simple piece of salad? And how on earth is it possible to purchase an animal, which was reared, fed for around, say, 40 days, killed, cleaned, packaged and transported, for £2 (for more on that note, I recommend Planet Chicken – released earlier this year).
Unfortunately I don’t have anything else to say, just “isn’t it odd”, and that I can’t help feeling that sometimes the economy gets costs wrong.
* nb. I was forced to purchase this unfortunate convenience food due to a lack elsewhere.
