serious photo spam

September 30th, 2007

I’ve been trying to work out why my installation of Gallery2 was going so slow.

This morning I discovered the answer, while backing up the database that stores all of the photo metadata. The database was over 2gb in size. Upon further investigation, it contained over 1 million comment spams. 1 million!

No wonder 4angle has been running slow of late, with the database getting hit that hard by spammers!

Remedial action taken: commenting disabled, since I didn’t use it anyway.

Gallery 2.3’s comment module features further spam-prevention features.

As in G2.2, you can enable CAPTCHA for guest-comments. But since CAPTCHA isn’t sufficient, G2.3’s comment module also has akismet integration. Akismet works wonders for comment spam in blogs. We expect the same effect for comment-spam protection in Gallery.

Gallery 2.3 isn’t available yet, but you can upgrade your comment module from the “experimental” repository already.
