bikes on trains – now book online!
October 16th, 2007
Three years ago I ranted about the inability to make reservations for cycles on thetrainline.com. Long distance rail operators insist that cyclists make a reservation for their bicycle in advance of travelling, but in order to do this one must reserve tickets by telephone or physically at a station.
GNER have changed all this. Today they launched (into some sort of beta test) their new online ticketing facility. I am pleased to report that in the final stages of booking you can now select ‘bicycle space’ and then make a bicycle reservation.
Magic.
And remind me again quite why this rail company (the only rail company with even an ounce of sense) just lost their franchise?

Yes, it’s all change up here in Leeds. GNER services will be taken over buy National Express in December, so if I want to come and visit you in London I have a choice of that route, Midland Mainline (owned by National Express) or by coach (also owned by National Express).
Virgin have also lost the Cross-Country franchise, and the route is taken on by Arriva next month. Their great innovation to increase capacity is to remove one of the toilets and the shop. This will create room for 14 extra seats.

Indeed, and they give the Cross Country franchise to a rail operator that has no experience of running a long-distance rail network, and a pretty bad reputation for its short-distance services.
