Information systems are complicated according to First Capital Connect
Saturday, March 14th, 2009
I recently wrote to First Capital Connect, who manage the railway station at Loughborough Junction. I wrote because the so-called real time train information is frequently incorrect for services operated by train companies other than FCC. I regularly catch Southeastern trains from this station, and while the trains are routinely late, the display will continue [...]
Trust me, I’m an everyday person
Thursday, November 1st, 2007
Some time ago I came up with the idea of a recommendations site where you, me and anybody else who cared could recommend things, specifically in the area of food. I wanted to know where to find the best chorizo, or the best olives, or the best bacon in London. I would invite the public [...]
smile.co.uk, Facebook and corporate PR
Sunday, October 21st, 2007
I’m often surprised what can be found on Facebook. Most recently I found a group which appears to be frequented by employees of smile.co.uk, the internet bank. It makes you realise how much corporations will begin to worry about the public voices of their employees. With topics of discussion as diverse as ‘How close have [...]
serious photo spam
Sunday, September 30th, 2007
I’ve been trying to work out why my installation of Gallery2 was going so slow. This morning I discovered the answer, while backing up the database that stores all of the photo metadata. The database was over 2gb in size. Upon further investigation, it contained over 1 million comment spams. 1 million! No wonder 4angle [...]
Predicting what to do tonight
Thursday, February 22nd, 2007
Since moving to London, I have been eagerly looking for good summaries of interesting events happening in the city. So much goes on here that you have to be focussed in what you choose to see. Also, so much happens that it is easy to miss things. First if all I found Flavorpill, and then [...]

my macbook has picked up the same random shutdowns reported elsewhere. let’s hope Apple find a real fix soon.
automated approaches to book categorisation
Friday, September 22nd, 2006
I’m particularly interested in ways in which we can automatically organise information, such as books, by categorisation. I was intruiged by a robot (although it doesn’t look like one) that we discovered in holiday. At Kolding Library (Denmark) they have a nicely automated book return system. Not only does this allow you to self-return books, [...]
organised chaos
Sunday, August 27th, 2006
It’s been a quiet (but tense) few weeks (months?). I’ve spent my time doing some research, and most recently, writing a thesis. The content of this, for the time being, will remain undiscussed. What I can say is that things have been out of the ordinary. I was particularly organised – see here, my organised [...]

Finding local food
Friday, May 5th, 2006
I like the idea of local food. I just discovered bigbarn.co.uk which facilitates searching for some local food, close to where you live. Nice.
