Loughborough Junction at Christmas
Wednesday, January 30th, 2008
In case you missed them, these are some pictures I took of Loughborough Junction on Christmas day (2007). Festive, isn’t it?
Au revoir Ashton Court (an obituary of sorts)
Saturday, July 21st, 2007
Last weekend was the 33rd Ashton Court Festival (2) - the annual multi arts festival for which Bristol is now well renowned. It was remarkable to see the festival in action again. After years of financial struggles, caused by foot and mouth, moving sites to the other side of Bristol and rapidly spiraling costs, the […]
new photo
Thursday, March 22nd, 2007
Two new photo galleries have appeared in my photo gallery. There has been a bit of backlog of photos to appear online caused by the old 4angle running out of hard drive space. We now have a new home on our own shiny little box (it’s one of these) in Sovereign House, which has considerably […]
a reminder to move
Wednesday, December 13th, 2006
I am enjoying some of the peculiarities of office life.
Whoever invented motion sensors for lights didn’t think it through well enough. We sit at desks to work, and our work involves relatively little movement. If we forget to stand up and walk around periodically, the lights turn off. So when the lights turn off, […]
Great British
Sunday, October 1st, 2006
Today I experienced spectacular (Great) British weather. In fact, it felt monumental. Driving rain, thunder and lightning over head. During the 8 mile cycle home I was concerned about getting trench foot.
But perhaps more surprising than rain in the UK was that during this intense rainy spell I was offered a lift by two […]
automated approaches to book categorisation
Friday, September 22nd, 2006
I’m particularly interested in ways in which we can automatically organise information, such as books, by categorisation.
I was intruiged by a robot (although it doesn’t look like one) that we discovered in holiday. At Kolding Library (Denmark) they have a nicely automated book return system. Not only does this allow you to self-return books, […]
organised chaos
Sunday, August 27th, 2006
It’s been a quiet (but tense) few weeks (months?). I’ve spent my time doing some research, and most recently, writing a thesis. The content of this, for the time being, will remain undiscussed.
What I can say is that things have been out of the ordinary.
I was particularly organised - see here, my organised […]
it’s showtime
Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006
All of a sudden, Edinburgh is being transformed from a quiet city enjoying a peaceful summer, with barely even a student in sight, to some uber-cultural capital. It’s odd.
This afternoon in the local corner shop, during the usual conversation about the weather (it’s been raining for the last 3 days), the shopkeeper asked how […]
a brief trip away
Wednesday, June 21st, 2006
The weekend before last I took myself on a brief excurtion to the Isle of Arran.
I cycled around the perimeter of the island - easily done in only a few hours. The results are here:
England fever
Wednesday, June 7th, 2006
After a 6 week gap, I visited Bristol at the weekend.
I suffered hay fever for the first time this season
I suffered a lot of people displaying flags featuring St George’s Cross
Both have cleared up since returning to Edinburgh.
