so my time is nearly up in brighton and i’m moving on. while i’ve talked to a lot of people about the possibility of visiting the chilly climes of the far south (can you say that?)..it’s not what i’ll be doing in the near future.

instead it looks like i’m going to the chilly climes of the north, and i’ll be moving to edinburgh at the end of the summer for a bit more study.

so any tips for edinburgh?

New Scientist writes about a research project to extract the most semantically meaningful pairing of words by using google.

they say:

The finding could bring forward the day that true artificial intelligence is developed.

a good read. they use the ‘normalised Google distance’ to determine how related a pair of words are, more search results means more related.. etc. i feel uncomfortable about google being involved in anything particularly useful though, for some reason.

busy new year

since the beginning of the year i’ve been very busy.

had a great session at the cube demonstrating the capabilites of wordpress on wednesday. documented by david.

and just now i’ve launched a little online presence for my response to the dream i had in april 2004. Description of a Food Item gets a home, although there is nothing to download or do there just yet. but there will be soon.

the University of Sussex home page gets make-over, it looks quite nice.

The BBC are running a news item, Apology over delayed test results, regarding the late return of Key Stage 3 test results to 13 and 14 year olds.

When I saw the title of this news item, I actually thought it was about the University of Sussex, or more specifically my department. So while test results might not be that important to 13 and 14 year olds, final year results for degree students have yet to be distributed, despite the fact that they officially came out last friday, because they ‘haven’t decided how to give the break down of marks to students’.

Of course, had I been thinking straight I would have known that the BBC article in question wouldn’t have been about Sussex, because not in a million years would a Sussex student receive any apology, or even any notification (without asking for it) that there is a delay in returning results.
