bikes on trains – now book online!

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Three years ago I ranted about the inability to make reservations for cycles on thetrainline.com. Long distance rail operators insist that cyclists make a reservation for their bicycle in advance of travelling, but in order to do this one must reserve tickets by telephone or physically at a station. GNER have changed all this. Today [...]

Cool Camping

Monday, May 28th, 2007

The bank holiday weekend took us on a long weekend break to the Isle of Wight. We opted to stay at in Brighstone at a camp site that Sarah once took an extended break at as a child. It just so happens that this camp site, beautifully situated at the edge of a cliff at [...]

No time to blog properly, other than to say that this campaign is critically important, and should be of interest to anybody who uses or might use the combination of bicycle and train: http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=4801 Good.

what you looking at?

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

There’s more to see in the missing photos department. I even thought these pictures had gone missing during the move from one laptop to another, but I found them backed up. Here we have a moderate sized gallery of pictures from our adventure across Denmark in September. The route took us to Newcastle, Gothenburg (by [...]

During the 8 mile cycle home I was concerned about getting trench foot. But perhaps more surprising than rain in the UK was that during this intense rainy spell I was offered a lift by two [...]

Unfortunately, due to a holiday getting in the way, I missed the deadline for the Cycling Weekly Tour of Britain photo competition. Although I won’t win, you can see the photos.

Hebridean spring

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

After a mammoth few months of non-stop working, last week brought a brief but incredible trip to the Outer Hebrides. After a rail journey to Oban, we caught a ferry to Lochboisdale (South Uist). We then cycled up through Benbecula, North Uist, Berneray, South Harris, Scalpay and back via Skye. Photos are now available, highlights [...]

it’s a wrap

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

In preparation for a forthcoming short trip to the Hebrides, Dawes 2 got a makeover at the weekend. At last, the red and black marbled handlebar tape was replaced (in a team effort style with sarah) with plain black. And it looks great. Dawes 2 seemed happy with a clean and miniservice too.

beating the ban

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

Thanks to bikebiz, I saw the best news article I’ve seen for a long time. Following the Southern recently banning cyclists from their trains, a gentleman asked permission to take a cardboard bicycle on the train, which he was indeed allowed to. It seems that you can take as much luggage as you like, and [...]
